UK Food Trends

The United Kingdom is embarking on a sumptuous journey towards World Foods this year, with Sri Lankan and Pan African culinary delights at the forefront of trends in 2023.

A recent Bidfood presentation at the International Food & Drinks Event (IFE), hosted at ExCel London, revealed some interesting insights about the UK's new-found collective embrace of flavourful foods packed with spices from far away shores. People are searching for something different when making supermarket purchases to prepare at home and when they are dining out, with "authenticity" at the top of the list in both scenarios.

UK supermarket chains have been incorporating World Food aisles in recent years. This is set to expand as mainstream consumers lean towards eating experiences that accommodate more adventurous and exciting flavours. According to Bidfood’s 2023 Food and Drink Trends report, 3 in 4 adults in the UK choose a world cuisine meal option during the middle of the week. There certainly seems to be more crowds forming in the World Food sections of supermarkets, providing physical evidence of this trend.

With the cost-of-living crises in full swing, UK consumers are being forced to make tougher decisions when choosing their dining-out options. Whilst eating at a restaurant continues to feature as a high priority past-time, consumers are opting for new food experiences when considering their leisure activity budgets. The idea of trying something new has become much more appealing, relegating the long-standing market dominance of Indian and Chinese cuisines to the side-lines.

Sri Lankan is one of many world cuisines that has discovered a second home in the UK. The number of newly dedicated restaurants popping up nationwide continues to grow and mainstream consumers are becoming aware of the delights of Coconut Sambol, warm flaky coconut roti’s, string hoppers, black pork curries and thick creamy lentil curry.

Consumers now have an abundance of fantastic restaurants to choose authentic Sri Lankan food from, in locations sprinkled across the country, but has the cuisine and the long list of required ingredients become accessible enough to be cooked from the comfort of home? Are people ready to invite their friends and family over for a Sri Lankan curry night, in the way that UK consumers are accustomed to “having an Indian curry night” at home? Not until now.
